October 2, 2022 – A Trip to the Dog Chapel

We visited the dog chapel, just up the road in Vermont.

The chapel is a place of memory where people can bring notes and pictures of their beloved pets.

Just a small sample of the notes.

There are also a few miles of trails to take your dog on a walk.

A dog-themed weathervane.

A pond and field to play in.

Out on the trail.

April 7, 2019 – Heald Reserve

After walking through three seasons yesterday, we decided to explore tropical southern NH for a six mile hike, where all the snow and ice are gone. This is in the Heald reserve near Peterborough and a walk back in time.

Today’s theme is “It won’t always be like this.” Ghost roads and fences in the forest. An old carriage road lined by stone walls, now lost to the forest. What would the people who traveled this road think? What will we think of interstate highways in 120 years?

At first blush a stone wall built in the pond seems strange, until you realize the pond is newer than the rock walls. Thanks to busy beavers.

Another view of the flooded rock wall that one time separated two fields most likely grazed by sheep.

A nice spot for some water and a snack.

Evidence! A nice lodge along the Castor Pond trail.

Kind of rare to see such a fine corner in a rock wall, usually just long stretches.

July 9, 2018 – Mt Washington Auto Road

Here it is – highest point in New England.

You can catch part of the auto road in the lower left.

We did a little exploring at the Alpine Garden trail -there is a trail here – you can spot a cairn trail marker in the middle left of the photo.

Legendary winds up to 213 mph make chains across this building a help to keep it in place.

The crew.

A quiet lunch spot.

The snowcat simulation at the top.

June 24, 2018 – Still 29 (Married years, that is)

It was time for something completely different from usual woods and water. A trip to a German restaurant.

The Bavaria House is just outside Manchester.

We also took in the Currier museum.

Got to check in with old friends like Picasso and Monet and a wonderful children’s book illustrators exhibit.

July 8, 2016 – Food Tour of Vermont

Today it’s an all-out food tour of Vermont.

First stop is King Arthur flour bakery and shop.

Nice bread – posted here for a challenge for Martin to re-create.

Mark and Linda gearing up to go into Green Mountain Coffee roasters.

No trip to Vermont would be complete without a trip to Ben and Jerrys!

The Dude would be sad to see the White Russian in the Ben and Jerry’s flavor graveyard.

Impressive solar array at the factory.

Onto cheese tasting at Cabot Cheese.

An unexpected treat was maple syrup aged in old bourbon barrels from Smuggler’s Notch Distillery. Along with stops at chocolate and apple cider places, this trip near Stowe, Vermont was topped off with a real meal, left unphotographed to protect those who may have ordered extra onion rings.
